A 28-year old man is accused of being the first thief to take a bite at a Mesa police "bait" car Saturday afternoon.
Ramon Villagran of Mesa was booked on one count of auto theft after police say he swiped one of Mesa's high-tech "bait" vehicles.
The specialized cars are equipped with tracking equipment so officers can disable the vehicle and stop the suspect.
A fleet of bait cars and trucks was sent out by five Valley police agencies earlier this month. A benefit of the bait cars is that they don't have to be watched around-the-clock by officers waiting for a person to attempt a theft, officials said.
Police say Villagran stole the car around Mesa Drive and Broadway Road and drove it to his home in the 200 block of South Mesa Drive. Villagran checked out the car then tried to drive it again, but an officer shut off the car's engine by remote.
Villagran admitted he took the car but said he was going to return it, police said.
